Crystle removes the vowel from the last syllable and English puts one back. A consonant cluster ending in l can carry a syllable on its own, which is why bottle and little and simple need no written vowel; the name is doing the same thing, and the syllable is there whether or not a letter marks it.

Where it comes from

The story of Crystle

Rock crystal was being worked into precise optical shapes long before anybody could make glass clear enough to bother. A polished disc found at Nimrud is ground to a curve that would work as a magnifier or a burning glass, and it is nearly three thousand years old; Roman writers describe using crystal balls to concentrate sunlight for cautery, and medieval reading stones were cut from the same material because glass of the period was green and full of bubbles. Seals, vessels and lenses were all made from it. The stone was doing the work that glass would eventually take over, and it was doing it well enough that the word for it ended up as the word for the best glass anybody could make.

Meaning

Ice

Greek krystallos, ice, applied to clear quartz by people who believed it was water frozen so hard it could not melt. The name is the English word for the stone used directly. Nothing in this spelling changes the meaning; it changes only how many vowel letters are on the page.

KRIS-tul

Two syllables, said exactly as Crystal. The l at the end carries a syllable without any vowel written for it, which English does constantly and almost never notices.

Crystle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1985, with 131 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Crystle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spoken name is completely established and never needs repeating.
  • The spelling is shorter than the standard one, which respellings rarely manage.
  • The meaning is concrete and can be given to a child in one word.
What to consider
  • Crystal is enormously commoner and this will be read as a slip.
  • The missing vowel makes the written name look incomplete to most readers.
  • It is strongly dated to the last decades of the twentieth century.
