Where it comes from

The story of Crystel

For about a century, museums in London, Paris and Washington held carved skulls of clear quartz presented as pre-Columbian Mesoamerican work. They were admired, photographed, written about, and attached to a substantial body of mystical speculation. Then people put them under electron microscopes and found rotary tool marks: the surfaces had been cut with wheels that did not exist in the Americas before contact. The most likely story traces most of them to nineteenth-century European workshops supplying a market hungry for antiquities. They are now displayed, where they are displayed at all, as examples of what a museum can get wrong for a hundred years.

Fashion outlook

Crystel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The word is in everybody's vocabulary, so the name is never mysterious.
  • The meaning is settled and easy to explain to a child.
  • It is read correctly at first sight even by people who have not seen this spelling.
What to consider
  • Crystal is the standard spelling by a wide margin and this one will be corrected to it regularly.
  • The changed letter cannot be heard, so the spelling has to be given aloud every time.
  • It belongs audibly to one stretch of American naming, which places it in time for most listeners.
