Dropping the l stops the name being a word. Crystal is an ordinary English noun and reads as one; Crysta is not a word in any language, which is exactly what a name usually needs to be, and the single removed letter does the whole job.

Where it comes from

The story of Crysta

The Greeks thought rock crystal was ice that had frozen so hard it could not melt. The word means ice, plainly and without metaphor, and the belief is reported by their natural historians as fact — the stone was supposed to form in the coldest mountain places where the freeze had gone permanent. It survived into the medieval period and is why crystal balls were held to be cold to the touch, and why the word for a frozen thing ended up naming every regular solid from salt to silicon. An error about mineralogy is sitting inside a very large piece of modern vocabulary.

Meaning

clear quartz, ice

From the Greek word for ice, applied to rock crystal and then to the class of solids generally. The sense is secure and the removed letter does not affect it.

Fashion outlook

Crysta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The dropped letter separates the name from a common noun cleanly.
  • It is short, brisk and completely easy to say.
  • The spelling follows the sound with nothing to explain.
What to consider
  • Crystal is far commoner and this gets corrected constantly.
  • It sits close to Christa, which is a different name entirely.
  • It is closely tied to the decades of its use.
