The story of Cozetta
In Les Misérables, the orphan who sweeps the floor of an inn and is rescued by Jean Valjean is known to everyone as Cosette, but Hugo tells the reader her mother had her christened Euphrasie, and Cosette is only what she was called. The novel made the pet name famous across Europe and America. Cozetta takes it and gives it the z and -etta of an Italian diminutive, and no record says who first did.
