This spelling doubles both of its consonants and neither doubling does anything. The standard form already has a doubled n; adding a doubled r as well gives the name two pairs, and since neither pair changes a vowel or a stress, the effect is entirely on the page.

Where it comes from

The story of Corrinne

What made the name European was a novel about a woman being crowned as a poet. Published at the start of the nineteenth century by a writer Napoleon had exiled from Paris, it follows a half-Italian half-English improviser who performs verse extempore in public and is garlanded at the Capitol, and who is then destroyed by an Englishman who cannot marry a woman like that. It was read everywhere, argued about everywhere, and it put the name into general use across Europe within a decade. The author had been told her book would be forgotten. It went through edition after edition and the name went with it.

Meaningscholars disagree

maiden

Usually derived from the Greek word for a girl with a diminutive ending, which would make it something like little maiden. The derivation is plausible and widely repeated but not proved, and the name may simply be a poet's own.

Fashion outlook

Corrinne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The stress at the back gives it a decisive and rather elegant finish.
  • Cora and Cori sit inside it as short forms with different characters.
  • It carries a genuinely literary history rather than a vague one.
What to consider
  • Corinne and Corrine are both commoner and this spelling gets corrected.
  • Neither doubling does anything audible, so both are effort spent on paper.
  • The generation that used it in America is now elderly.
