Corri is a short form in a spelling that gives no clue which longer name it belongs to, and the record holds it for sons as well as daughters. The Greek city the likeliest candidates point back to had a reputation in English that had nothing to do with architecture.

Where it comes from

Our story of Corri

For most of the nineteenth century, calling an Englishman a Corinthian did not mean he liked columns. The city had a reputation in antiquity for wealth and loose living, and the adjective carried that into English as a term for a rich young man devoted to sport, drinking and general dissipation — the Regency version of a playboy, boxing and driving four-in-hand for amusement. The word turns up throughout the sporting press of the period. When amateur football and yacht clubs began forming later in the century, several took the name deliberately, meaning gentlemen who played for the love of it rather than for money, and that sense survives in the phrase the Corinthian spirit. One word for a city produced a byword for luxury, a term for a rake, an architectural order and a synonym for sportsmanship, and they all coexisted.

Corinne, Cora and Cordelia all yield this short form and have different origins — one Greek by way of French, one Greek directly, one Welsh or invented. Registered alone, the short form points back to none of them, and the sound is also a Scottish surname.

Corri sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Corri sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, warm and readable at first sight by anybody.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • Every letter does what English expects.
What to consider
  • Corrie, Cori and Corey are all commoner and will be written for it.
  • It reads as a nickname, and people will ask what it stands for.
  • Which longer name it belongs to is not recorded, so the answer has to be a family one.
