Where it comes from

The story of Cordell

Rope-making was a substantial medieval trade — ships, wells and cranes all depended on it — and gave surnames across England and France. Cordell Hull was Roosevelt's secretary of state for eleven years and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945 for his part in founding the United Nations. The name is in current American use.

Meaning

little rope, cord-maker

From the Old French cordelle, a diminutive of corde, 'rope', from the Latin chorda and the Greek khorde, 'gut string'. It was an occupational byname for a rope-maker. The same root gives cord, chord and cordon. The etymology is documented.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cordell went to 77 boys in 2025, but Kordell is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 107, which makes it the 821st most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,155 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 15,963 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 22,183 for Cordell itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The rope-maker meaning is concrete and records a real and necessary trade.
  • A Nobel Peace laureate and founder of the UN carries it.
  • The end stress gives it a strong rhythm against a front-stressed surname.
What to consider
  • The Cord clipping is an ordinary English noun.
  • It reads as a surname before it reads as a given name.
  • It is period-coded to the later twentieth century in American records.
