The story of Cookie
When New Amsterdam became New York, the Dutch word koekje, little cake, stayed in the city's kitchens, and it became the American cookie while British English kept biscuit. As a pet name it was given to girls who were sweet in their parents' eyes. The word gained a strange second life in computing: a programmer at Netscape named the small file a website leaves on a visitor's machine a cookie, after the magic cookie of older programming slang.

Fashion outlook
Cookie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

- It is almost never given now as a legal name, so it is distinctive.
- It reads as a nickname, and many will assume a longer legal name behind it.
- It can feel young on an adult, and it will be joked about.
