The story of Consuella
The novel came first. George Sand published a long romance called Consuelo about a singer with a great voice and no money, and it was read across Europe in the middle of the nineteenth century and translated everywhere — a book that put the name in front of readers who had never met a Spanish speaker. The marriage came fifty years later. Consuelo Vanderbilt, heiress to an American railroad fortune, was married to the Duke of Marlborough in a wedding the newspapers covered minute by minute; she later testified, in proceedings to annul it, that her mother had locked her in her room and that she had wept behind her veil on the way to the church. The name was in every paper in the country twice over.
Meaning
Consolation, comfort
The Spanish word is consuelo, the comfort given to someone in grief. As a name it is an abstraction handed to a child, in the same tradition as Esperanza and Soledad. The doubled l here is an American spelling choice and changes nothing.

Fashion outlook
Consuella sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled, generous and unusual — it is about what the name gives rather than what the child is.
- It is understood across the Spanish-speaking world without explanation.
- It offers short forms in two languages that sound nothing alike.
- Consuelo is the standard spelling and hers will be corrected to it by Spanish speakers.
- It is long for American use and will be shortened whether or not anyone asks.
- The name carries a religious association in Spanish that English speakers will not hear.
