The story of Constantina
Constantina, daughter of the emperor Constantine the Great, was buried in the fourth century in a round mausoleum on the Via Nomentana in Rome, later the church of Santa Costanza; its vaulted ceiling is still covered with mosaics of vines and small figures bringing in the grape harvest, and her great porphyry sarcophagus is now in the Vatican Museums. The name stayed in use in the Greek world through Byzantium, and Greek families still give Konstantina as the feminine of Konstantinos. Modern Greek writes a d sound with the two letters nt, because its own letter delta is said like the th of this, so the short form Dina appears on Greek paper as Ntina.

Fashion outlook
Constantina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning, 'steadfast', that is easy to explain.
- Rooted in Greek and Italian family tradition with a history reaching back to imperial Rome.
- Comes with several well-worn short forms: Tina, Dina, Connie.
- Four syllables is long for everyday use, and most Constantinas are called by a short form.
- People will sometimes shorten it to Constance or Christina by mistake.
- Outside Greek and Italian families it will read as unusual, which some parents want.
