The story of Conchetta

Italian families in the south gave Concetta in honor of the Immaculate Conception, and immigrants brought it to America in the early twentieth century, where it was sometimes written Conchetta under the influence of Spanish Conchita. Concetta Franconero of Newark became the singer Connie Francis, one of the best-selling women in pop music at the end of the fifties. Concetta Scaravaglione, a New York sculptor of the Depression-era public art programs, was the first woman to win the Rome Prize in sculpture, in 1947.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning tied to a major feast.
  • Comes with Connie and Tina as ready short forms.
  • Rooted in Italian-American family tradition.
What to consider
  • Italian speakers expect Concetta; the h reads as a k sound to them.
  • It will need spelling out on every form.
  • It reads as an older-generation name.
