Where it comes from

Our story of Clydie

The river had to be built. Glasgow sits well inland and the Clyde in its natural state was shallow enough to wade across in places — useless for shipping. Over the better part of a century engineers narrowed it with jetties so the current would scour its own channel, then dredged what the current missed, and turned a ford into a deepwater route that brought ocean ships to the middle of the city. The shipyards followed, and the city grew on the back of the alteration. A name taken from that river is taken from a piece of geography that people rebuilt on purpose, which is unusual for a landscape name.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The river name is pre-Celtic and has not been convincingly explained; readings involving washing or strong flow have been proposed and not demonstrated. The name came into use as a first name in Scotland and America and carries the river and nothing more.

Fashion outlook

Clydie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm on sight, as pet forms are.
  • It points at a real river with a documented history.
  • It is read correctly the first time.
What to consider
  • The spelling is recorded for both sexes, and the older record holds many men.
  • It reads as a nickname, so a longer form will be assumed.
  • The name belongs entirely to one American era.
