The story of Cleopatra
Cleopatra was a Macedonian dynastic name — Alexander's sister carried it — and the Ptolemies used it for seven queens in Egypt. The seventh is the one everyone means: she ruled for twenty-one years, spoke Egyptian when her predecessors had not, and lost a war to Rome. The name has been used steadily in the Greek world and among African-American and Caribbean families, and it appears in American records from the nineteenth century.
Meaning
glory of the father
From Greek kleos, glory or fame, and pater, a father; the masculine Patroklos is the same two elements in the other order. The name was in Macedonian royal use before the Ptolemies took it to Egypt.
