The story of Claudina
According to Livy, in the first years of the Republic a Sabine leader named Attus Clausus, who favored peace with Rome, was outvoted at home and left for Rome with a large band of clients. Rome gave them land beyond the Anio and citizenship, and he became Appius Claudius, founder of a family that produced consuls, censors and, much later, emperors. Every woman of that family was a Claudia, and Claudina, the little Claudia, is the pet form Spanish and Italian built on it. Claudina carries no separate story on record; its history is the family's.

lame, by an old link to Latin claudus
Claudius was a Roman family name. Ancient writers tied it to claudus, lame; the family's own tradition traced it instead to the Sabine name Clausus. Neither reading is settled.

Fashion outlook
Claudina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- An old Roman name in a lighter, three-syllable form.
- Used in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, so it reads as native in several heritages.
- The clear stress on the long ee makes it easy to say once heard.
- People will write Claudia or Claudine unless told.
- Some name books give lame as the meaning; it is an old guess rather than an established reading, and the family itself told a different story.
