Classie
Feminine
Classie appears in American registers in the last decades of the nineteenth century with no explanation attached, which is normal for names made at home rather than borrowed. The word it resembles has a much older history than the modern sense suggests: class comes from the divisions of a Roman census, and being classic originally meant belonging to the top one.

Our story of Classie
The word it sits next to is worth the detour. A Roman census divided citizens into ranked groups for military and voting purposes, and each of those groups was a classis. To be in the first one was to be at the top of the arrangement, and a writer described as belonging to it was, by extension, a first-rate writer. That is where classic comes from: not from age but from rank, and only later from the particular period whose writers were considered first-rate. The everyday modern senses of class, all of them, descend from a Roman administrative form. Whether this name has anything to do with that word cannot be shown, but a child who asks can at least be told what the word next door has been doing for two thousand years, and told honestly that the name itself arrived without paperwork.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source can be established. It may be the English word with an affectionate ending, it may be a shortening of a longer name, and it may be neither. Names of this kind were made locally, often on the model of names already in the family, and they entered the record without any accompanying account because nobody thought one was needed. The honest description is a home-made name from a particular time and region, which is a real category rather than a research failure.

Fashion outlook
Classie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Nobody will mispronounce it and nobody will need it spelled twice.
- It has a genuine nineteenth-century record rather than a modern reconstruction of one.
- It is warm and unpretentious in a way that formal names have to work at.
- The modern sense of the word is audible in the name and carries a claim the child did not make.
- There is no meaning or origin to give, which is the accurate answer rather than a gap.
- It is very firmly of its period and has had no revival at all.
