Clarene can be read as Clara with an ending or as a woman's version of Clarence, and nothing in the record chooses. Both rest on the Latin word for clear, which produced an unexpectedly large family in English — including an instrument that has vanished and left one phrase behind.

Where it comes from

Our story of Clarene

A clarion was a real instrument: a short trumpet with a narrow bore, higher and more piercing than the long military trumpet, used for signals precisely because the sound cut through noise. The name is the Latin word for clear with an ending on it, and the whole point of the thing was that you could hear it. It went out of use as brass instruments changed, and by the time anyone alive had heard one the word had drifted into a stock phrase — a clarion call — which is now almost the only place it appears, generally used by people who could not describe the instrument if asked. The related word clarinet means a little clarion, which is misleading: the two are not related as instruments at all, and the clarinet's own lowest register is still named after a different folk pipe it replaced.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Latin adjective for clear or bright lies behind every candidate, so the general sense is not in doubt; which name this one was built from is. Clara with a lengthening, Clarence feminised and a free build from the sound are all possible, and the registers do not say.

Fashion outlook

Clarene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
  • The sense behind it — clear, bright — is plain and needs no explaining.
  • It is rare without containing anything a reader has to be taught.
What to consider
  • Clarine, Clareen and Clarene are all recorded and the spelling will need giving.
  • Stress placement is genuinely unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
  • Nothing records which name it came from, so the origin has two answers and no evidence.
