The story of Citlally
The snow-capped volcano that Spanish maps call Pico de Orizaba has a Nahuatl name, Citlaltépetl, star mountain, and it is the highest peak in Mexico. Nahuatl nouns often end in -tl, a sound English cannot easily say, and when Nahuatl words came into English through Spanish that ending was worn down: tomatl became tomato and xocolatl became chocolate. As a name, citlalli kept its heart and lost its ending in the same way, and Mexican and Mexican American families made it Citlali and Citlally.
