Where it comes from

The story of Cinnamon

Where the spice came from was a trade secret for a thousand years and the cover stories were magnificent. Herodotus records, apparently in good faith, that cinnamon sticks were gathered by enormous birds to build their nests on inaccessible cliffs, and that traders got them down by leaving out large pieces of meat which the birds carried up until the nests collapsed under the weight. Other accounts had it guarded by winged serpents. All of this was almost certainly put about by the Arab middlemen who controlled the route, to keep buyers from asking where the trees actually grew — which was Sri Lanka, and stayed a secret until the Portuguese arrived.

Meaning

the spice

The English word for the inner bark of several related trees, taken as a name. The word itself came into Greek from a Semitic source and its earlier history is not recoverable; the name carries the spice rather than any older sense.

Cinnamon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1969, with 202 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Cinnamon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm, concrete and instantly understood without any explanation.
  • The spelling is unambiguous and never needs repeating.
  • It has a genuinely long and interesting trade history behind it.
What to consider
  • The obvious short form is a homophone of an unfortunate word.
  • It is very firmly tied to one short stretch of years and reads as belonging to them.
  • It is a food, which some adults find harder to carry than children do.
