Cindi
Feminine · “of Mount Kynthos”
Cindy comes from a mountain. Cynthia is a title of Artemis — the Cynthian, the goddess of Mount Kynthos on the island of Delos, where she was said to have been born — so the name is a place name applied to a deity and then to people. Cindy detached from it and from Lucinda at the same time.

The story of Cindi
Delos was one of the most important sanctuaries in the Greek world and was believed to be the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, which made a small rocky hill on a small rocky island into a name that has been in use for two and a half thousand years. English poetry took Cynthia as a name for the moon in the Renaissance and it entered ordinary use from there. Cindy came out of it in America in the twentieth century, along with Cindy from Lucinda, and the two sources merged so completely that most Cindys could be either.
Meaning
of Mount Kynthos
Kynthos is a hill on Delos, and Kynthia means belonging to it; Greek and Roman poets used the epithet for Artemis and Diana, and by extension for the moon, which is why Cynthia turns up in English poetry meaning the moon rather than a person. The mountain's own name is pre-Greek and not recoverable. The derivation of the name from the epithet is not disputed. Lucinda is a separate road, from the Latin for light.

Fashion outlook
Cindi sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Cynthia is available as a formal long form with a documented Greek history behind it.

- Cindy is the standard spelling and this will be rewritten as that on most documents.
- It reads as a nickname, and the formal version has to be supplied by the family.
- The name is very strongly tied to one American generation and dates a person closely.
