Cidney

The story of Cidney
The letter c is soft — said as an s — before e, i and y, and hard everywhere else. That is why cent and city and cycle behave one way and cat, cot and cut another, and it is one of the very few English spelling rules with almost no exceptions. A respelling that puts a c at the front of this name is relying on it entirely: the following letter is an i, so the c is soft, and the name is read correctly by anybody. Try the same trick on a name with an a after it and the whole thing collapses. Respelling has rules even when it looks arbitrary, and the ones that work are the ones that obey the reader's expectations rather than fighting them.

From Saint-Denis, or from a wide water meadow
The name behind it is a surname with two proposed origins, a French abbey name and an English word for a wide meadow, and neither has been established. The respelled first letter adds nothing to either.

SID-nee
Two syllables, stress at the front. The c is soft because an i follows it, and the name is said exactly as Sidney.

Questions parents actually ask
Fashion outlook
Cidney sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is read correctly on sight because the spelling obeys a real rule.
- It works for either child.
- It is rare while the name is entirely familiar.
- Sidney and Sydney are both standard and hers will be written as one of them.
- The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
- The c invites a question every time the name is written out.
