Two changes hide a country in plain sight. The i becomes a y and the n is doubled, and what was unmistakably a place name becomes something that reads as a coinage. Said aloud nothing has changed at all; on paper almost everything has.

Where it comes from

The story of Chynna

The country does not call itself this and never has. The word comes from the Qin, a dynasty that unified the warring states, standardized the writing system, the currency and the width of cart axles, built the first version of the great wall and produced the buried army of terracotta soldiers. It then collapsed, having lasted about fifteen years. That is an astonishingly short run for a dynasty whose name reached Persian, then Sanskrit, then Latin and finally every European language, while inside the country itself the name was replaced by the next dynasty's and never came back. So the word means, roughly, the place the Qin briefly ran, and it is used everywhere except by the people who live there.

Meaning

from the name of the country

The word is the English name of the country, respelled. It carries no separate sense of its own, and the respelling adds none. What the country's name itself means is a longer and more surprising story.

Fashion outlook

Chynna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely familiar and never needs a second attempt.
  • The respelling gives it a distinctiveness on paper that the plain word lacks.
  • It has an easy rhythm and sits comfortably as a full name.
What to consider
  • It is a country's name however it is spelled, and that will always be noticed.
  • Chyna, China and Chynna are all in use, so the spelling gets queried constantly.
  • It is firmly tied to the decades of its rise and reads as belonging to them.
