The story of Christinia
Christina of Markyate is known because somebody wrote her life down while she was alive. She had privately vowed herself to religion as a girl; her parents arranged a marriage anyway, tried argument, drink and force, and she escaped in men's clothes on a horse. She was hidden by a hermit and then walled into a cell beside a chapel at Markyate, in a space where she could not stand upright, for four years, in secret, fed through a gap. When it was safe she came out, was released from the marriage, and ended as prioress of the community that grew up around her. Her book is one of the very few medieval accounts of a woman's life told largely as she told it, and it exists because the man who wrote it knew her.
Meaning
A Christian
A feminine form of the Latin christianus, a follower of Christ. It is a statement of allegiance rather than a description of a person, which is why it exists in every European language and why it spread wherever conversion did. The added i in this spelling carries nothing; it lengthens the written name and, in most families, not the spoken one.

Fashion outlook
Christinia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The name behind it is universally recognized, so it never has to be repeated aloud.
- Tina and Chris are two entirely different everyday forms, one soft and one brisk.
- It is close enough to the standard spelling to be readable at once, whatever else is true of it.
- The extra letter has no agreed pronunciation, so even the bearer's own family may say the name two ways.
- Christina is the standard spelling by an enormous margin and will be written instead of this one.
- It sits inside a very large family of near-identical names and will be confused with all of them.
