One silent letter is all that separates this name from a man's. Christian and Christiane are identical on the page except for the final e, and in English that e makes no sound at all — which is why the record for this spelling holds so many boys. The signal is entirely visual, and visual signals get lost.

Where it comes from

The story of Christiane

Scotland complicates the question further, because there Christian was for centuries an ordinary woman's name. Parish registers from the sixteenth century onward are full of women recorded as Christian, with no e and no apology, alongside men bearing the same spelling. The form was simply unisex in a way that later English usage stopped allowing, and the Scottish women called Christian were not being given a man's name by mistake. So a page that treats the final e as the thing making the name feminine is describing a fairly recent English convention rather than a rule. For a long time the name did not need the letter at all.

Meaning

a Christian; a follower of Christ

From the Latin adjective, feminine form. The masculine and feminine differ by an ending in Latin as they do in French, and English, which has no such system, has to carry the distinction on a letter it does not pronounce.

Christiane sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1971, with 87 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Christiane sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a standing name in French and German rather than an English invention.
  • Chris and Anne sit inside it as short forms with nothing in common.
  • It carries a clear and untroubled meaning.
What to consider
  • It differs from a man's name by one silent letter, and the record shows how often that fails.
  • The stress placement differs between English and the languages it comes from.
  • Christina, Christine and Christiana all sit nearby and get substituted.
