Christena was charting in the very first year anyone counted, which most respellings were not. It is not a modern variant of Christina at all — it predates the American habit of respelling by decades and belongs to a period when the two endings were simply alternatives.

Where it comes from

The story of Christena

Before American spelling became self-conscious about names, the ena and ina endings were interchangeable in ordinary writing, and both were used for the same women in the same documents. Helena and Helina, Christina and Christena, Wilhelmina and Wilhelmena all appear in nineteenth-century records without any suggestion that one was correct. What changed was print: as names became standardized in books and forms, one spelling per name became the norm, and the alternatives were retrospectively read as errors. Christena is one of those — an ordinary older spelling that now looks like a modern decision.

Meaning

Christena sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1975, with 50 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Christena sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly at sight by anyone who has met the commoner spelling.
  • It carries several short forms with quite different characters.
  • It has an unbroken run in American records from the first year they were kept.
What to consider
  • Christina is the standard spelling and will be written instead.
  • It will be read as a modern respelling when it is in fact an older one.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the nineteenth century.
