Cheyanna
Feminine
Cheyanna adds a vowel to a place name and turns it into a woman's name, which is a device American naming uses steadily. The place name itself is not what the people it names call themselves: it is a word from a neighboring and unrelated language, recorded by outsiders, and it has stuck to a nation, a city, a river and a great many children.

The story of Cheyanna
The city came before the state. A railway survey party laid out a town on the high plains in the eighteen sixties, named it after the nation whose territory it was in, and the place became the territorial and then the state capital; the railway made it and for a few years it was one of the wealthiest towns per head in the country. The nation the name belongs to call themselves by an entirely different word, which means something closer to the people or those who are like this, and the name everybody else uses came through a third language altogether. That is the ordinary situation for indigenous names on the American map: what got recorded was what a neighboring people called them, heard by a European who wrote down an approximation.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The word behind the place name comes from a neighboring language and its meaning is disputed; the reading usually given describes people speaking unintelligibly, which is a common way for one people to name another and is not a translation of anything the Cheyenne say about themselves. The added vowel here contributes nothing except a feminine shape.
How the name formed
- A word from a neighboring language for a plains nation
- Applied to a river, a territory and a railway town
- Cheyenne taken as an American girl's name
- Cheyanna, with a vowel added
Pronouncing Cheyanna

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The added final vowel is the only difference from the place name, and it is enough to move the word from a map into a register.

Fashion outlook
Cheyanna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely familiar to Americans and needs no explaining.
- Anna is available inside it as a complete and international short form.
- The rhythm is even and the name carries well when said in full.
- It names a living nation, and using it as a personal name is not neutral for everybody.
- Cheyenne is the standard spelling and this one will be converted into it.
- The meaning attributed to it comes from a neighboring language, not from the people named.
