Where it comes from

The story of Chester

The same borrowed word came out differently in different parts of the country. In the north and the Danish-settled east it stayed hard: Lancaster, Doncaster, Tadcaster. In the west and the midlands it softened to chester: Manchester, Winchester, Colchester. In the south and southwest it collapsed further still, to cester, and then stopped being pronounced at all — which is why Gloucester, Worcester and Leicester are said in two syllables and why no visitor gets them right. A map of those three spellings is a rough map of where the Danes settled and where they did not.

Meaning

A Roman fort

The Latin castra, a military camp, entered Old English early and became the standard way of naming a place with Roman walls still standing. The city in the northwest is the plainest example, being simply the camp.

Chester sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1926, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Chester sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and points at something you can still walk around.
  • It is read correctly on sight by everybody.
  • Chet is a short form that sounds nothing like the full name.
What to consider
  • It is strongly associated with one American generation.
  • It reads as a place and a surname as much as a first name.
  • The spelling is recorded for both sexes, though nearly every bearer in the record is a boy.
