Where it comes from

The story of Cherryl

The fruit is named after a town on the Black Sea. Roman writers say the cherry was brought to Italy from Kerasous in Pontus, on the northern coast of what is now Turkey, by a general returning from a campaign there, and the Latin name of the tree is built on the town's. The account is probably too tidy — cherries grew wild in Europe already — but the word does come from that region, and the town is still there under a related name. A fruit in every supermarket is carrying a place name from the edge of the classical world.

Fashion outlook

Cherryl sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The doubled letter supplies a warm and obvious short form.
  • It is far rarer than the standard spelling while sounding identical.
  • The sound is settled even where the opening consonant confuses readers.
What to consider
  • The word cherry is visible in it and will be noticed by every reader.
  • Cheryl is standard and this spelling gets corrected constantly.
  • The opening consonant is ambiguous and gets mispronounced.
