The story of Cheron
Élisabeth Sophie Chéron, a painter, poet and musician trained by her father, was admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris in 1672, one of the very few women the academy accepted in its first century; she became known above all for her portraits and her engraved gems. In the United States Cheron appears in the middle of the twentieth century, when Sharon was one of the commonest girls' names in the country, and it most likely wrote Sharon with a French-looking ch. A real minority of the children given the spelling are boys, which fits the surname more than the Hebrew place.

Fashion outlook
Cheron sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Sounds like Sharon, a name everyone knows.
- Carries a real French surname with a distinguished bearer.
- Rare, so a Cheron is unlikely to share the name.
- People will write Sharon or Sheron, so it will need spelling out.
- Some readers will say it the French way, shay-RON; decide which one the family uses.
- Most children with this spelling are girls, but a real minority are boys; either child may be taken for the other.
