Chenille is the French word for a caterpillar, and the fuzzy corded yarn was given the name because a length of it looks exactly like one. Follow the French word back and it comes from the Latin canicula, a little dog, which is where it gets strange: Romans apparently looked at a hairy caterpillar and saw a small dog, and the word stuck through two thousand years and one change of language. The same Latin word names the Dog Star and gave English the dog days of summer. So a bedspread, a caterpillar and the hottest weeks of the year are all carrying the same small Roman dog. Chenelle is not documented as descending from any of this. It simply lives next door.
