Chelsea
Feminine · Old English roots · “chalk landing place”
Chelsea is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 162,884 girls against 451 boys since 1880.
Chelsea began as a bend of the Thames riverbank — an Old English landing place for chalk, named centuries before anyone was named for it. The district went on to collect a physic garden, a flower show, a bun, a boot and a Joni Mitchell song, and it was the song, in 1969, that carried the word into American birth records in earnest. Two syllables, the second one soft and open.

The story of Chelsea
Chelsea is a place before it is a person: a riverside parish on the north bank of the Thames, west of Westminster, recorded in Old English as a landing place for chalk. Over the centuries the district gathered its own furniture — the Physic Garden of the seventeenth century, the Royal Hospital and its pensioners, and in the twentieth the King's Road, Chelsea boots and Chelsea Football Club. Manhattan borrowed the name for its own neighborhood, taken from an eighteenth-century estate named after the London one, and it was that New York Chelsea that Joni Mitchell sang about in 'Chelsea Morning' in 1969. American parents heard the song and began using the word as a first name, which is how a chalk wharf ended up on class registers.
Meaning
chalk landing place, from Old English cealc 'chalk' and hyð 'wharf, landing place'
The early spellings of the London parish point clearly to a riverside wharf where chalk or limestone was unloaded. Older popular readings like 'chalk port' or 'chalk wharf' say the same thing in different words.

The Christine test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Chelsea's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Christine climbed just as high around 1967, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Christine's path sketches the road Chelsea is walking now.

The trade-off
- One pronunciation everywhere in the English-speaking world; almost no one has to be told how to say it.
- A ready-made short form in Chels that has been in use as long as the name has.
- Familiar across Britain, Ireland, Australia and Canada as well as the United States, so it travels without explanation.
- A documented origin a child can actually look up — a real place with a real Old English etymology behind it.
- Chelsea Football Club is one of the best-known clubs in the world, and for many people — especially outside the United States — the name reads as a team before it reads as a person.
- Most Chelseas alive are adults rather than children, so the name currently sits with a particular generation. A child would likely be the only one in her year, which cuts both ways.
- Chelsey, Chelsie and Chelsi are all in circulation, so the spelling will sometimes need confirming even though the sound is obvious.
