Where it comes from

The story of Chelsa

The garden survived because of a lease with a condition attached. A physician who owned the land granted it to the apothecaries in perpetuity for a nominal rent, on condition that they send fifty dried plant specimens a year to the Royal Society until two thousand had been delivered, which took them nearly forty years and produced a herbarium that still exists. The garden also ran the first heated greenhouse in England, introduced the plant that started the rubber trade in Asia by way of Kew, and has been quietly doing this since before the American colonies were independent.

Meaning

Chalk landing place

An English place name recording a wharf on the Thames where chalk was unloaded. It became a district of London, then a surname, then a given name, and the chalk has been forgotten at every step. Nothing in the name refers to a person or a quality.

Fashion outlook

Chelsa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely familiar and never mispronounced.
  • Elsa sits inside this spelling as a complete name of its own.
  • The place behind it is real, famous and easy to look up.
What to consider
  • Chelsea is far commoner and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
  • The name points to a London district and a football club before it points to a person.
  • It is closely dated to the last quarter of the twentieth century.
