The Royal Hospital at Chelsea was founded in the seventeenth century as a home for old and injured soldiers, and it is still doing exactly that. Its residents, called Chelsea Pensioners, wear a scarlet coat and a tricorne hat on ceremonial occasions, a uniform essentially unchanged since the institution opened, and they turn up at remembrance ceremonies, cricket matches and the flower show held in the hospital's own grounds. The building is by Wren. Women have been admitted since the twenty-first century. It is one of the few charitable foundations of that era still performing its original function, in its original building, for its original purpose.
