Chaya
Feminine · Hebrew roots · “living one”
Chaya is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 15,674 girls against 10 boys since 1880.
Chaya is the Hebrew word for a living thing, in the feminine — built on chai, "alive," the same root behind the toast l'chaim. It has been given to Jewish daughters for centuries in Europe and in Israel, and it arrived in American records in the years just after the Second World War. Two syllables, an open ending, and a meaning a child can understand as soon as she can ask.

The story of Chaya
The root sits at the center of Hebrew: chai, alive. In Genesis, Chava — Eve in English — is named as the mother of all living, and the word for life runs through blessings, toasts and prayers from there on. Chaya emerged as a given name among Ashkenazi Jews in Europe, often given as one half of a double name, and Chaya Mushka became especially widespread in Chabad-Lubavitch families after Chaya Mushka Schneerson. Yiddish-speaking families brought it to the United States, and it also travels independently as a modern Israeli name, where it is frequently written Haya. Quite separately, a similar spelling belongs to the Sanskrit name Chhaya, "shade" — a different name that happens to meet this one near the same letters.
Meaning
living one, life
From Hebrew chai, "alive, living." Chaya is the feminine form; the masculine Chaim carries the same root.

Pronouncing Chaya
KHAH-yah
The ch is the throaty sound of Chanukah, not the ch of chair. Ashkenazi families often say KHAH-yeh; Israeli Hebrew stresses the second syllable, kha-YAH. English speakers unfamiliar with the sound tend to reach for HIGH-uh or CHAY-uh, which is worth expecting.

The Noel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Chaya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Noel climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Noel's path sketches the road Chaya is walking now.
Chaya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is plain and unmistakable — "life" — and needs no explaining once said.
- Short, phonetically simple to write, and identical in spelling across English and transliterated Hebrew.
- A continuous record of use among Ashkenazi Jewish families in Europe, Israel and the United States, with the Haya spelling working in Israel.
- Established diminutives already exist, from Yiddish Chayale to the shorter Chayi.
- The initial ch will be mispronounced by many English speakers, who default to CHAY-uh or drop the sound altogether. Most families with this name spend a lifetime offering a gentle correction, which is manageable but real.
- Several spellings compete — Chaya, Haya, Chaja — so she may need to spell it out on forms and hear it back wrong on the phone.
- The name reads as clearly Jewish, and in observant communities often as specifically Orthodox. For many families that is exactly the point; it is worth deciding on purpose rather than by accident.
- Outside those communities it is unfamiliar enough that she will rarely meet another, which some children enjoy and others find tiring around the first week of a new school.
