A chevron is a goat. The French chevron meant a rafter, and it is a diminutive of chèvre, a goat — either because a pair of rafters meeting at a ridge looks like a goat's hind legs, or because the roof frame was thought to resemble the animal's skeleton. Heraldry borrowed the shape for the band that rises to a point, military ranks borrowed it from heraldry, and it now marks sergeants, service stripes and road signs. The same animal is in the word chevril, in Chevrolet as a surname, and in the cheveril leather Shakespeare uses for something that stretches. English took the shape and forgot the goat entirely, which is what usually happens when a word arrives as a technical term.
