Charnell may join a free front to the ending American naming attaches to everything, or it may respell a French word that English uses for a grim kind of building. A different French word of the same shape gives the name of the person who sits at the edge of a dance.

Where it comes from

Our story of Charnell

A chaperone is a hood. The French chaperon named a hooded cape worn in the Middle Ages, and the figurative use — an older woman accompanying a young one in public — comes from the idea of covering or sheltering her, not of supervising her. English borrowed the word in the eighteenth century with the social sense already attached, and lost the garment entirely; the original chaperon survives in heraldry and in the names of one or two academic hoods. The verb followed the noun, so to chaperone somebody is etymologically to put a hood over them. The sense of surveillance, which is now the whole of the word, is something English added after the clothing had been forgotten.

The Cha- front and the -ell ending are both free elements in American naming. The English word of this spelling names a vault for bones, which no family is likely to have intended, and nothing records what was intended instead.

Charnell sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1990, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Charnell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and each is usable on its own.
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • The spelling is phonetic once the ch is known.
What to consider
  • Charnelle, Sharnell and Chanel will all be written for it.
  • The spelling matches an English word for a bone vault, which some readers will know.
  • The ch is read as a hard k by strangers.
