Where it comes from

The story of Charmin

The song 'Charmaine' was written for the 1926 silent film What Price Glory, and in 1951 Mantovani's lush orchestral version became his first big hit, and Charmaine became a familiar girl's name. In 1928 the Hoberg Paper Company of Green Bay, Wisconsin, launched a toilet paper in a wrapper decorated with a woman's face, and someone called it 'charming'; the product was named Charmin. Charmin is one of the spellings of the Charmaine family.

Charmin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
