Where it comes from

The story of Charletta

Charlemagne kept writing tablets under his pillow and never learned to write. His secretary says he could read, spoke Latin as well as his own language, understood Greek, and worked at forming letters in bed when he had a spare moment, having started too late in life; the hand never came. He ran an empire, imported scholars from three countries, reformed the script that the whole of western Europe then used for four centuries, and could not sign his own name comfortably. The reformed script is the reason we have lower-case letters and spaces between words, which is a strange legacy for a man who found a pen difficult.

Meaning

Free man

The Germanic word behind Charles described a free man of no particular rank, which is why it was available to become a royal name at all. The endings on this version are borrowed twice over, a French diminutive with a Latin vowel after it, and they carry register rather than meaning.

Fashion outlook

Charletta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Charlie is available as an everyday form and is entirely current for women.
  • The meaning of the name underneath is concrete and easy to give a child.
  • Three short forms in three quite different registers.
What to consider
  • Charlotte is far commoner and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
  • The stacked endings belong to no single language and cannot be explained.
  • It is dated to the middle of the twentieth century in American use.
