Charlotte in North Carolina and the county it sits in were named in the same gesture. The colonial assembly named the county Mecklenburg after the German duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and the town after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz herself, who had just married George the Third — a piece of flattery toward a new queen consort from a colony that would declare against her husband within fifteen years. The city still calls itself the Queen City and puts a crown on things. She had fifteen children, was a patron of Johann Christian Bach, corresponded with Marie Antoinette, and by most accounts disliked public life; the American places named for her outlasted almost everything she did in England.
