Charlesetta
Feminine · “Free man”
Charlesetta is built from a man's name kept absolutely whole, s and all, with an Italian ending fastened on behind it. That is not how the older feminines of Charles were made. Charlotte, the one everybody knows, throws the s away, and the difference between the two methods is the difference between two centuries.

The story of Charlesetta
French made its feminine of Charles by cutting the name back to Charl-, adding a diminutive, and finishing it with an e, which gives Charlotte and gets rid of the s on the way. American naming in the last century took the opposite approach. It treated the full name, exactly as written on a father's or a grandfather's papers, as an unbreakable unit, and attached the ending to the outside of it. That is why the American record holds Charlesetta and Charlesetta's cousins alongside Willieanna, Jamesetta and Johnnie Mae: the point was to carry a particular man's name entire, not to make a new name out of its parts. Charles itself was a foreign name in England, barely used until the Stuarts brought it south from Scotland, and it survived a king losing his head over it before it became ordinary.
Meaning
Free man, made small
Charles descends from a Germanic word for a man of no rank who was nonetheless free, the ancestor of the English word churl before it soured. The ending attached here is a diminutive, so the name means something like a little Charles, which is what a feminine formed this way always means. The important part is what was kept: the s belongs to the Latin form of the name and had been discarded by every European feminine before this one.

Fashion outlook
Charlesetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It carries a particular man's name whole, which is exactly what it was built to do, and that is legible to anyone who knows the tradition.
- Etta and Charlie are both strong, current, independent names sitting inside it.
- The construction is transparent: anybody can see how the name was made and why.
- Four syllables and eleven letters means the name will be shortened by other people almost immediately.
- The formation is closely dated to one period of American naming and reads as a grandmother's name.
- It will be misheard as Charlotte constantly, and the correction has to be made every time.
