Charlean is built on a name that was nobody's until one man made it something. Before the eighth century Charles was an ordinary Frankish word used as an ordinary Frankish name; then a soldier who never held the title of king ran the kingdom for a quarter of a century, and everything after that follows from him.

Where it comes from

The story of Charlean

Charles Martel was mayor of the palace, an office that had begun as a household steward's job and had swallowed the monarchy while the kings it served became ornamental. He commanded the armies, took the taxes, appointed the bishops and stopped an Arab army in central France, and he did all of it without ever being crowned; when the last figurehead king died he did not bother to replace him and simply carried on. His son took the crown and his grandson became Charlemagne, and from that point the name was royal across Europe: Carolus in Latin, Karl in German, Carlos in Spain, and eventually a name in England too. Every Charlene, Charlotte, Carla and Charlean descends from a man who ran a country he was not entitled to run.

Meaning

Free man

The Germanic word described a free man of no rank, which is precisely why it is odd that it became the most royal name in Europe. The ending here is an American addition, one of a set of endings attached to men's names in the last century to make women's names from them, and it carries no meaning of its own in any language.

Charlean sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1952, with 43 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Charlean sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely familiar, so the name is understood immediately even where the spelling is not.
  • Charlie is available as an everyday form and is entirely current for women now.
  • Final stress gives the name a clean finish and makes it carry when called.
What to consider
  • Charlene is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected by people acting in good faith.
  • The back half spells an English word, and children find that sort of thing quickly.
  • The name is firmly dated to the first half of the last century in American use.
