Where it comes from

Our story of Charlcie

Our story of Charlcie begins with a man's name made into a daughter's. English has made girls' names from Charles for centuries, Charlotte from the French, Caroline from the Latin Carolus, Charlene much later, and American families went on making their own. Charlcie is one of those: Charles cut to Charl-, then finished with the soft ending of Elsie and Chelsea, and written with a c. Its twin Charlsie keeps the s instead. Nobody wrote down which came first, and the name has come down in both spellings, rare in each, carrying Charles with it either way.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Charlcie is plainly built on Charles, whose own root is a Germanic word for a man, later a free man, but no record says who first put this ending on it or why a c was chosen. Charlsie, the same sound with an s, stands beside it, and the record does not say which came first.

Fashion outlook

Charlcie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Clearly built on Charles, so its family connection is obvious.
  • Charlie is a ready, familiar short form.
  • Two syllables, easy to say once heard.
What to consider
  • People will write Charlsie, Charlsey or Chelsea when they hear it, so it will need spelling out.
  • Some readers will try a hard k for the c at first; it is easily corrected.
