Our story of Charice
Latin calix is a cup, and it gives English chalice by way of French. Greek had kalyx, a husk or a pod, and botanists took it for the ring of sepals that wraps a flower bud and then sits under the open flower like a cup. The two words are probably related at a distance and were certainly confused in antiquity. So the vessel on an altar and the green collar under a rose are carrying the same idea of something that holds a thing, which is a pleasant coincidence for anybody who looks closely at either.

Fashion outlook
Charice sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The stress is unmistakable, so it is rarely mispronounced once the opening is settled.
- Char and Reece are both available as short forms and both are in use.
- It is soft throughout with no difficult consonant in it.
- The opening letters mislead readers who reach for the English ch first.
- Cherise, Charisse and Cherice are all in the record and will be confused with it.
- No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
