Chardae writes a sound rather than a word, in a spelling that gives an English reader almost no help. The vegetable it accidentally spells the front of has a name that has defeated everyone who has tried to explain it.

Where it comes from

Our story of Chardae

Swiss chard is not Swiss. It is a Mediterranean plant, a beet bred for its leaves rather than its root, and it was eaten around the Mediterranean for a very long time before anyone in Switzerland is recorded as taking an interest. Where the Swiss came from is genuinely unsettled: one account says a Swiss botanist gave the plant its scientific description and English-language seed catalogs attached his nationality to it; another says publishers used the word simply to distinguish it from the French varieties they were also selling. The chard half is French, from a word for a thistle or an artichoke, applied to the thick edible stalk. So the name joins a country the plant is not from to a word for a different vegetable, and it has stuck for two hundred years.

Not established

No source is documented. The sound belongs to a family of American names that arrived in the same decade and are spelled a dozen ways; the singer's name that is usually cited is itself a Nigerian shortening and does not account for most of them. The English word inside the spelling is a coincidence.

Pronouncing Chardae

shar-DAY

Two syllables with the stress at the back. The ch says sh, which the spelling gives no warning of, and the ae at the end says a long a, which it also does not.

Fashion outlook

Chardae sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • Both halves detach as short forms and sound nothing like each other.
  • The sound is smooth and easy to say once it has been heard.
What to consider
  • Nothing in the spelling tells a reader how to say it, so it will be mispronounced on sight for a lifetime.
  • Sharday, Charday and Shardae are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • There is no meaning to report, and the glosses offered for the family are invented.
