A chantry was money set aside to have masses sung for the dead, and the crown took the lot. Thousands of them existed in England, each paying a priest to sing for a named soul; an act of parliament confiscated the endowments, and the priests, many of whom also ran the local school, were pensioned off.

Where it comes from

The story of Chantay

The word is still on the map. Chantry Chapel, Chantry Lane and Chantry Field survive all over England, marking buildings and fields whose income once paid for singing; the chapels themselves were often kept as side aisles and are still there, stripped of their purpose. The schools attached to them are the reason the dissolution was contentious even among people who approved of it, and a number of grammar schools founded in the years immediately afterwards were re-founding what had just been taken away. Whole institutions were dismantled and rebuilt inside one generation because the money had been arranged for the wrong reason.

Meaningscholars disagree

Sung

The front is the French chanter, to sing, and the spelling of this name writes the final vowel the way English can read it. The commonest French name in this family, Chantal, is not from that verb at all but from a place name about stony ground, so the singing sense belongs to this spelling more securely than to that one.

Pronouncing Chantay

shahn-TAY

Two syllables with the stress at the back. The French would write the last sound with an accented e, which American records strip, so the ay spelling is the only way the page can carry it.

Fashion outlook

Chantay sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling makes the pronunciation explicit, which the French one does not.
  • Final stress gives the name a definite finish and makes it carry.
  • Two short forms with nothing in common.
What to consider
  • Chante, Chantel and Shantay all circulate for closely related sounds.
  • The spelling reads as a phonetic fix rather than as a French name.
  • It is closely dated to the second half of the twentieth century.
