Where it comes from

Our story of Chancey

Take the u out of Chauncey and the old family name falls into line with the word chance, one e away from the adjective chancy. Jerzy Kosinski saw that same meeting point and made a novel of it. In Being There, a gardener named Chance, who has never left his employer's house, is taken for a gentleman called Chauncey Gardiner, and the misunderstanding carries him into the company of presidents. This spelling holds both halves of that joke at once, the gardener's plain word and the gentleman's name, in seven letters.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Chancey is a spelling of Chauncey, from a Norman family name taken from a French place that has not been firmly identified; nothing records a meaning. The English adjective chancy, 'risky,' is a separate word. No record says when or where the u was first dropped.

Fashion outlook

Chancey sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Spelled the way it is said, which Chauncey is not for every reader.
  • Keeps the history of Chauncey in a plainer spelling.
  • Rare, and unlikely to repeat in a classroom.
What to consider
  • It sounds exactly like chancy, an English word for risky, and a few people will hear that.
  • People who know Chauncey may assume a misspelling, and the name will need spelling out.
  • A real minority of the children given this spelling are girls, so it is not settled on either side; even so, a girl called Chancey will often be assumed to be a boy on paper.
