Where it comes from

The story of Champagne

Champagne was first a landscape: the Latin campania, open level country, named the chalky plains northeast of Paris. The same word, passed through French campagne and Italian campagna, gave English campaign, because armies moved out into open country when the fighting season began. The province later gave its name to the sparkling wine made there, and the wine gave its name to a pale gold color. As a given name, Champagne arrives carrying all three at once, the place, the drink and the color, and the record does not say which one each family meant.

Meaning

open country, from the Latin campania

The word goes back to the Latin campania, level open country, which named the province northeast of Paris; the sparkling wine takes its name from the province, and the pale gold color from the wine. Which of these a family had in mind for a daughter is not recorded.

Champagne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1991, with 43 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Champagne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A word everyone can spell and say, so it will never be mistaken on a form.
  • Carries a real place and a real word history reaching back to Latin.
  • Rare as a given name.
What to consider
  • The name is first a wine, and the alcohol association is the one most people will make; some will find it playful and some will not.
  • As a word used as a name, it will draw comments about celebrations at school and at work; the name is easy to say and impossible to misspell, which counts for a lot.
