Celesta
Feminine · “heavenly”
Celesta and Celeste are the same word wearing two nationalities. The a ending is the Latin and Italian one; the silent e is the French. English has borrowed both and treats them as separate names, which they are not, and the difference between them is entirely a matter of which country the family took it from.

The story of Celesta
A pope took this name and then did something no pope had done. He was a hermit in his eighties, elected after the cardinals had spent two years failing to agree, and he was so obviously unsuited to the job that after five months he issued a decree establishing that a pope could resign, and then resigned under it. His successor had him imprisoned, where he died. Dante, who loathed what followed, is generally thought to have put him in the vestibule of hell among those who refused to choose — the ones heaven will not take and hell will not have. No pope resigned again for over seven hundred years.

Fashion outlook
Celesta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is transparent and connects to an ordinary English word.
- The a ending gives it a fuller shape than the French form has.
- It is genuinely uncommon while containing no difficult sound.
- Celeste is far commoner and this form will be substituted constantly.
- It shares its name with a keyboard instrument, which some will hear first.
- The generation that used it in America is now very old.
