The story of Catina
Aikaterine was the name of the Alexandrian scholar-martyr whose legend spread across Europe, and Greek kept it as Aikaterini and Katerina. Greek familiar forms work by contraction — Katina and Catina from Katerina, Dina from Konstantina — and these traveled with Greek emigration to America in the early twentieth century. Catina moved beyond Greek-American communities in the 1960s and peaked in the early 1970s.

pure
Through Aikaterine, whose received meaning is the Greek katharos, 'pure'. That reading arrived after the name did: the oldest recorded form is not explained by katharos, and the spelling was reshaped toward it under the influence of the saint's legend. The original sense is not recovered.

Questions parents actually ask
Fashion outlook
Catina has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off
- A genuine Greek familiar form, not an American respelling of one.
- It sits inside one of the largest name families in Europe while sounding like none of the others.
- Cat and Tina are both available and pull in opposite directions.
- Katina with a K is the commoner transliteration.
- The meaning of the parent name is not actually recovered, whatever the standard reading says.
