Catheryn
Feminine
This takes the c from one standard spelling and the y from the other and belongs to neither. The English and French tradition writes a c and an e; the German and Scandinavian one writes a k and sometimes a y; Catheryn crosses them, producing a hybrid that no country would recognize as its own.

The story of Catheryn
One of the most consequential women to carry it was not called it until she was fifteen. She was born a minor German princess with an entirely different name, was brought to Russia as a bride for the heir, converted to Orthodoxy as part of the arrangement and took a new name on conversion — this one, after the empress's own mother. Six months after her husband became emperor she deposed him with the help of the guards, ruled for thirty-four years, and is the only Russian sovereign apart from Peter to be called the Great.
