Cathern
Feminine · “unknown”
Cathern writes the name in the two syllables English speakers actually use, and it does so a long time before the more familiar compressed spellings appear. The middle vowel of Catherine had been disappearing from ordinary speech for centuries; this spelling simply stopped pretending otherwise.

The story of Cathern
Catherine Parr was the sixth wife, the one who outlived him, and she was also the first woman to publish a book in English under her own name. Prayers or Meditations came out while she was queen and went through several editions; a second and more dangerous book followed after his death. She was nearly destroyed for it — a warrant was drawn up for her arrest over her religious opinions, and she talked her way out of it in a single conversation by telling the king she had only ever argued with him in order to be instructed. He is said to have been delighted. She married again within months, died in childbirth, and was buried in a private chapel that was lost for two hundred years.

unknown, though long read as pure
The Greek original has never been explained and may not be Greek. What English did with it is easier to trace: the name arrived with a th that medieval scholars had inserted to match an etymology they preferred, then lost its middle vowel in speech while keeping it in writing, and then acquired a set of spellings that record the loss. Cathern is one of the earliest of those in the American record — a generation ahead of the shortened forms that would become standard.
How the name formed
- a Greek name of unrecovered meaning
- medieval scholars insert a th to match a preferred etymology
- the middle vowel disappears from English speech
- Cathern records that loss in the 1880s
- the compressed spellings become standard much later

Fashion outlook
Cathern sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It offers the full set of Catherine's short forms — Kate, Cath, Kitty, Katie — without any of them looking odd.
- The name is eight hundred years old and this spelling is genuinely rare.
- It is read correctly at first sight, which the standard spelling is not always.
- Catherine and Kathryn are both enormously commoner and will be written instead.
- The spelling looks like an error to people who have not thought about how they say the name.
- The meaning she will be given — pure — is a medieval mistake rather than a fact.
